The Millenary Light* is a geometric interpretation of a stalactite and stalagmite formation. The piece is meant as a comment on the way contemporary design can take advantage of the natural world, while moving away from nature. The steel rod frame gives the form a strong, planar base while the paper creates a soft, delicate surface. The hard geometry of the frame connects to contemporary design while the paper refers to nature. Often when nature is referenced in contemporary design it is used as added aesthetic to increase profits. The Millenary Light is meant to suggest the experience many people have upon leaving an artificially lit cave in nature. They do not necessarily appreciate the time that went into the forming of these massive, natural creations nor the darkness in which they exist. The light within my stalactites and stalagmites ironically makes the piece more marketable.

*The title Millenary Light refers to the 1,000 years it takes for stalactites and stalagmites to grow just 10 cm.
